Gramma's Sourdough
Starter
~ 2 ½ cups warm water 1 tbsp. yeast
~ 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tbsp. salt
~ 1 ¾ cups flour
To make Starter
1) Combine 2 ½ cups warm water, sugar, salt.
2) Add flour, yeast, and beat vigorously until smooth.
3) Cover. Let stand for 4 days, at room temperature,
4) Stirring daily. Then use in the following recipe for bread.
Sour Dough Bread
~ 1 ½ cups milk 2 tbsp. margarine or oil
~ 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp. Sugar
~ 1 ½ cups starter 5 ½ cups flour
~ 1 tbsp. fast rising yeast
Directions
1) Combine milk, margarine in a saucepan and warm till margerine is melted and milk is warm.
2) Pour into large bowl
3) Add salt, sugar, and starter.
4) Add 1 cup of flour and yeast and mix.
5) Continue combining in the flour to make soft dough. Turn onto floured board.
6) Knead until smooth and elastic.
7) Place in greased bowl.
8) Cover
9) Let rise until dough has doubled, approx. ½ hour.
10) Divide dough into 3 loaves, and place in greased pans.
11) Let rise until dough has risen to a height of just over sides of pans, Approx. ½ hour.
12) Bake in 350 oven until golden brown. Approx. 30 minutes.
